I hope to have the site fully functional by the time I go to bed tonight. Most of your IPS's will not update thier IP tables for at least 4 hours, many for 24 to 48 hours, so most of you will not see the new host just yet. |

It took a lot of talking but we finally got through to the higher level of tech's at Aplus.net, and they finally admitted the problem to us with the site. The short version is they are throttling the site back because it is to busy/etc for their machines to handle. We have opened a dialog with a new host and showed them out site stats, and they are fully willing to support our load on multiple load balanced machines. I will be moving the site over to the new host as fast as I can.
This means the site will be sporadic at best till the move is complete. I will post updates on the ODS Status page (http://odsstatus.mantidom.com/ ) as I get new information. Once this move is complete, the problems should resolve. At least that is the promise right now. | Saturday, Stepember 9th, 2006 : 630am CDT | Most of you should have received an email last night about our problems here with our current host. But since email has been flaky with them too, I will summarize, recap, and update here.
Our present host is Dreamhost, as most of you know. Some of you will also remember we switched to them because the previous host was tremendously expensive and horrible for service. When we started on Dreamhost it was great, fast and solid. Everyone cheered and was happy with the new host for a long while, but over the last few months Dreamhost has been horrible. Their tech support queue is such that it takes days to get an answer to even a minor issue. In the last couple-few months our database has gotten corrupted multiple times, the site has been extremely sluggish, often timing out and several time just completely down. Our automated backup has been failing to run because the server we are on is overloaded (for those of you that know the top utility on Unix systems the load average last night was 656.7). I sent a trouble ticket it in last night asking to be moved to another server, one not so overloaded. Their only reply at this time is: ****************** If you are experiencing website slowness or downtime on all of your sites hosted, then the chances are, that you are experiencing the network problems that have been plaguing us for some time. We have major maintenance scheduled for Monday that we feel will resolve these long standing issues. The network issues unfortunately got worse today so the downtime you may be experience is system wide and we are already working on the issue. If you are not writing in about these problems please continue to support, otherwise please keep an eye on http://www.dreamhoststatus.com Sorry about the problems, we are hopeful for Mondays maintenance. You can keep updated at dreamhoststatus.com! ****************** Not exactly what I call overly confident sounding. We are presently researching new hosts to move to, and thankfully most of you have websites some where, some of you even have good ones. smile.gif We have received 1/2 dozen or so suggestions only one of which offers everything we need in a host so we are seriously considering moving to them soon. The problem with moving the site is three fold, one is that we are pre-paid up for quite a bit of time on Dreamhost and will likely loose that money since it is from past referrals. The second is in order to get a decent workable price we will likely have to pre-pay at least a year’s worth, and the third is the amount of work and time it will take to replicate our site on to a new server. Just moving the domain name usually takes a couple days, never mind the 40 gigs of data we presently have. If we do have to move (looking likely at this point) (or heck even if we stay) I am looking at the possibility of a sponsorship page like the Clear Sky Clock does. One of our members has suggested that to me more then once, and I think I am ready to listen. smile.gif The idea is simple you send some money to help with the move and paying for new hosting/etc, and you get a logo on the site that’s linked to your site. |
